William Gear:The painter the Britain forgot
17 July – 27 September
This is a fabulous, ‘must see’ exhibition, a major retrospective of his work, with around 80 vibrant works.
William Gear is a previous curator of Towner and this exhibition runs alongside an exhibition of works acquired by Gear, for the Towner, including Sandra Blow, Alan Davie, Roger Hilton and Ceri Richards.
portrait of a wonderful woman.
Oil and charcoal on paper.
I have been illustrating a book, but managed to get into the studio yesterday.
What a treat!
A fabulously focused show, not to be missed ….!
Becoming Picasso: Paris 1901 is a small collection of work produced by Picasso when he was 19, for his debut exhibition in Paris.
During 1901 Picasso painted at least 120 paintings and emerged as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
I was struck by these self portraits – they show self-confidence and intensity – perhaps a turning point in Picasso’s work.
oil painting on paper
A great morning in the studio, painting our lovely model.
This is charcoal, oil and oil stick on paper.

In a dark gallery, with dark walls, 7 wonderful photographs shine …..
The bodies of the models are painted with ground marble dust, making them cold and translucent.
The photographs are very large – which made me feel like I was looking at sculptures.
An inspirational exhibition.
Until 9th February.

This morning was our last session with Helen modelling – I would love to have just one more week, but I haven’t, so will have to stop there ….!
